When water is absorbed by conventional insulation systems, it reduces overall effectiveness because moisture conducts heat more efficiently than air. A small amount of moisture can cause a significant drop in thermal efficiency. Also, as operating temperature increases, the negative effects of moisture increase as well. Things like molten sulfur, slurry, and asphalt emulsions stored in the +200°F range will see a larger drop in thermal efficiency once moisture is added.
Another side effect of moisture is corrosion under insulation (CUI), which has proven to be a major problem in the marine, petrochemical and chemical process industries. Due to the insulation’s ability to trap moisture and hold it against the surface, corrosion-promoting atmospheres rapidly degrade most carbon steel substrates. Marine-DTM
Mascoat Marine-DTM is a composite coating exclusively designed for harsh marine environments that provides thermal and anti-condensation protection. This highly effective coating is a water-based, one-part coating comprised of air-filled particulates held in suspension by an acrylic binder. It applies like paint and is maintenance-free, providing a thermal barrier and anti-condensation capabilities for shipboard construction.
Mascoat Marine-DTM is in use on thousands of marine vessels from Alaska to Antarctica. This coating can replace or work in conjunction with most blanket and foam insulation products. A key product benefit is substantial reduction of weight which helps keep vessels within stringent marine codes and classifications. It is easy to apply to stiffeners and other tight areas without adding excess weight. The coating bonds directly to the substrate or primer, leaving no room for corrosion to take hold. Industrial-AC
Mascoat Industrial-AC (anti-condensation) is a specially formulated version of Mascoat’s already successful and widely-used Industrial-DTI thermal insulating coating designed to combat condensation in industrial environments. Over the years, our lab has been researching special materials that would play a major role in redesigning the product to specifically attack and prevent condensation. The result is a composite, moisture-resistant insulation coating that reduces or completely eliminates condensation, provides an insulating barrier, protects personnel and equipment and prevents corrosion - all in one easy-to-apply product.
Mascoat Industrial-AC is applied via airless spray systems, reducing installation cost and time. Also, because it is applied directly to the substrate, the substrate is viewable at all times. This allows for easy maintenance and inspection without total shutdown, breakdown or downtime.

The Risks of Condensation
Condensation is caused by a difference in temperature between two sides of a surface, resulting in one surface being lower than the dew point. When the temperature falls below the dew point, water vapor is released next to the surface, resulting in condensation. In some industrial applications, this is hard to overcome.
Condensation in the workplace can increase the risk of severe accidents and equipment is subjected to water that can cause corrosion as well as biological growth which can lead to serious health issues. To reduce the chance for condensation to occur, a thermal barrier such as Mascoat Industrial-AC is needed to buffer the temperature to at least 1.5°F above the dew point.
